AWS announced general availability of Interconnect - multicloud, a new networking product that gives customers a private, dedicated, resilient connection directly between their AWS VPCs and workloads running on other cloud providers, with Google Cloud as the first launch partner and Microsoft Azure and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure following later in 2026. Before this, connecting workloads across two clouds meant a do-it-yourself approach: standing up your own VPN tunnels or leased lines, managing routing by hand, and accepting the operational complexity of a multi-layered network that nobody at either cloud provider actually supports end to end. Interconnect - multicloud replaces that with a managed product that provisions dedicated bandwidth and built-in resiliency between environments, and it plugs directly into existing AWS networking primitives like Transit Gateway and Cloud WAN, so multicloud connectivity can scale to many VPCs and regions without re-architecting a company's network from scratch. The pricing model is a single fee based on bandwidth and geographic scope, and a free local 500Mbps interconnect per region is included, lowering the barrier for teams that want to experiment before committing to a larger link. For engineering teams running genuinely multicloud architectures, whether for redundancy, cost arbitrage, data residency, or simply inheriting infrastructure from an acquisition, this closes a real gap: cloud providers have spent a decade optimizing the network inside their own walls while treating cross-cloud connectivity as somebody else's problem. An open API package on GitHub also means other cloud providers can integrate with Interconnect without AWS having to build every integration itself, which is the detail that suggests AWS wants this to become an industry-standard interconnect layer rather than a one-off AWS-to-Google pipe.
