Cursor Launches Origin, a Git-Hosting Platform Built for AI Coding Agents

Anysphere, the company behind the Cursor AI code editor, began rolling out Origin to paid Cursor users on August 17, 2026, a native git-hosting platform built directly into the editor rather than a separate product like GitHub or GitLab. Origin bundles repositories, pull requests, code review, merges, and CI hooks into Cursor itself, with bidirectional sync to existing GitHub repos so teams can adopt it incrementally instead of migrating wholesale. It is built on infrastructure from Anysphere's December 2025 acquisition of Graphite, and it leans into stacked pull requests and automated merge-conflict resolution, features aimed squarely at a workflow GitHub was not originally designed for: AI agents that clone, branch, commit, and merge at a pace far beyond human developers. Cursor claims Origin can sustain around 296,000 clones per hour and 22 commits per second per repository, numbers meant to signal it can absorb agent-driven traffic spikes that would strain conventional git hosting. The launch landed, coincidentally or not, on the same day GitHub suffered a multi-hour global outage, which gave Origin's pitch, that legacy code-hosting infrastructure was not built for the AI-agent era, an unusually well-timed demonstration.
