Apple announced refreshed Mac mini and Mac Studio desktops via press release on August 25, skipping a keynote event, with pre-orders opening the same day and most configurations shipping starting September 22. The Mac mini moves to the new M6 chip alongside an M5 Pro option, while the Mac Studio gets M5 Max and M5 Ultra configurations; the base Mac mini starts at $899. The M6 is notable as Apple's first chip built on TSMC's 2-nanometer N2 process, arriving in a desktop machine before the same silicon generation reaches the iPhone lineup, and the top-end M5 Ultra Mac Studio configuration supports up to 512GB of unified memory with an 80-core GPU. For developers and technical teams, the memory ceiling is the detail worth paying attention to: running or fine-tuning large language models locally is generally constrained more by available unified memory than by raw compute, so a workstation-class Mac with 512GB of memory addressable by both CPU and GPU makes it practical to load substantially larger models on-device than previous generations allowed, which matters for teams doing on-device inference, privacy-sensitive AI workloads, or local development against large models without cloud costs.
